Glossary: reality dating-show production terms

Use these as the crew would say them. Terms marked [LI] are Love Island-specific, [LIB] Love Is Blind, [BACH] Bachelor franchise, [THTH] Too Hot to Handle.
- Aftercare: the post-filming welfare package: minimum eight therapy sessions and 14 months of "proactive contact" on Love Island; eight sessions at up to $150 each on Love Is Blind. (The Independent, 2021-06-16; reality blurred, 2023-10-16)
- Aftersun [LI]: ITV's weekly companion show; contract requires islanders to appear on it and "any other making-of programmes." (Mirror, 2019-06-26)
- Beach Hut [LI]: the confessional room; a camera with a producer's voice piped in from the gallery; there are two, upstairs and downstairs. (The Tab, 2022-07-18)
- Bombshell [LI]: a new islander inserted mid-season to test couples; signs a different contract from the original line-up and is paid less. (Mirror, 2019-06-26; Grazia, 2023-07-31)
- The Bubble [BACH]: Kaufman's name for the producer strategy of total sequestration: no phones, music, books, news, or leaving the property; "all that matters is the show." (New York Post, 2018-02-27)
- Camera hide: a false wall with a sliding window through which a lens pokes; used at the kitchen, fire pit and lounge. (Architectural Digest, 2025-07)
- Casa Amor [LI]: the second villa where one sex is sent for a minimum of four days while six new singles arrive at each villa. (USA Network, 2025-06-23)
- Casting producer: the person who scouts and interviews applicants; "middlemen" who edit interviews down to 90 seconds to 3 minutes for the EP and network, who make the final call. (The [F]law, 2026-08)
- Challenge producer [LI]: a segment producer whose department keeps games like "Snog, Marry, Pie" ready to drop into any afternoon. (Business Insider, 2022-08-03)
- Chaperone: a crew member who accompanies islanders during pre-villa hotel lockdown, mic-off days and sex-segregated meals, and who stops them discussing the show. (Mirror, 2019-06-26; E! News, 2022-08)
- Comms: the on-set radio; "comms check," "good check," "what's your 20?" (location); being "keyed on" means broadcasting by accident. (Beyond Reality, 2019-01-26)

- Conversational guide [LIB]: a daily list of topics (children, parents, politics) handed to pod daters; optional, "but they should" use it. (Vulture, 2024-06-04)

- Dumping [LI]: an elimination from the villa; can be restaged if cameras missed it. (E! News, 2026-06)
- Executive producer (EP): holds overall creative authority; Love Island UK runs four EPs with daily department-head meetings. (PGA Code of Credits; Business Insider, 2022-08-03)
- Field producer: on-location producer who directs coverage, runs interviews and manages talent; writes the daily hot sheet. (PGA Code of Credits; Staff Me Up, 2026-02-03)
- Frankenbite: a sound bite recut from separate clips so it means something the speaker did not say; hidden under B-roll. (THR on Kaufman, 2018-03-13; CineD, 2024-10-31)
- Hero cam [LIB]: an extra sliding-wall camera in five of the twenty pods for better close-ups; high-interest pairs are placed there. (Vulture, 2024-06-04)
- Hideaway [LI]: the private bedroom producers open for one couple; 2025 rule lets islanders use it "with whoever they want." (Capital FM, 2025-07-16)
- Hot sheet: a field producer's end-of-day written summary of the story shot, sent to post. (Staff Me Up, 2026-02-03)
- "I've got a text!" [LI]: the on-camera cue when production messages an islander's show-issued phone; phones run a Love Island-only messaging system with fake dates and times. (Digital Spy, 2015-06; E! News, 2022-08)
- ITM (In the Moment) [BACH]: the Bachelor's term for a same-day confessional interview; producers timed them to contestants' emotional peaks. (THR on Kaufman, 2018-03-13)

- Magic pantry [LI USA]: a cupboard with a rear door into the crew kitchen so islanders can request food without seeing crew. (Architectural Digest, 2025-07)
- Movie Night [LI]: the challenge that shows islanders out-of-context clips of their partners; source of the 2021 record 24,763 Ofcom complaints. (The Guardian, 2021-08-11)
- NDA / confidentiality provision: the clause barring cast from discussing the show or making "negative or disparaging" comments; enforced against Luke Parker for $100,000 plus fees. (reality blurred, 2020-10-12)
- Nosecco [LI]: non-alcoholic prosecco served to islanders under the two-drink limit. (Cosmopolitan, scraped 2026-09-04)
- Off-rig [LI]: the camera crew that shoots dates and anything outside the fixed villa rig. (Business Insider, 2022-08-03)
- OTF (on the fly): a quick reaction interview grabbed during action, also called a "voxy." (Beyond Reality, 2019-01-26)
- Participant: the production companies' contractual label for cast, chosen to avoid "employee"; the NLRB says it is a misclassification. (THR, 2024-12-12)
- Participant Release and Agreement [LIB]: the 30-page cast contract, including a one-page Emergency Medical Release. (reality blurred, 2023-10-16)
- Pickup: a retake or added shot after the main scene, for corrections or alternate options for the edit. (Beyond Reality, 2019-01-26)
- Pod [LIB]: a 12 ft by 12 ft soundproof dating room with a shimmering opaque wall and speaker audio; twenty exist, ten per sex. (Netflix Tudum, 2025-03-07)
- Post producer: writes the detailed episode outline with timecoded bites and act breaks; works directly with the editor. (John August blog, 2012)
- Ranking sheet [LIB]: nightly form listing who each dater wants to see again; fed into a matching algorithm that sets the next day's dates. (Vulture, 2024-06-04)
- Recoupling [LI]: the fire-pit ceremony where islanders choose partners; producers ask them to "lock in" their choice beforehand. (E! News, 2026-06)
- Reveal [LIB]: the first face-to-face meeting of an engaged couple through sliding doors, 15-20 minutes, watched by producers on a bank of screens. (Vulture, 2024-06-04; E! News, 2025-10)
- Robo-cam / rail cam: remotely operated fixed cameras and track-mounted mobile cameras run from the control room. (Architectural Digest, 2025-07)
- Segment producer: produces discrete segments (dates, challenges); Elan Gale's entry job on The Bachelor. (PGA Code of Credits; NPR, 2018-01-09)
- Showrunner: the EP with final creative and management authority over the whole series. (PGA Code of Credits)
- Stitch team [LI USA]: the post unit that assembles story-team scenes into six or seven acts per episode. (TheWrap, 2024-07)
- Story producer: the post-production producer who screens all footage, outlines the episode and builds stringouts; "essentially the scriptwriter" of unscripted TV. (Wrapbook, 2023-11-03)
- Stringout: a rough assembly of selected clips in story order, before tightening, music and effects. (Staff Me Up, 2026-02-03)
- Tannoy [LI]: the villa loudspeaker system used to call islanders to the Beach Hut and wake them up. (The Tab, 2022-07-18)
- Villain edit: cutting a cast member to fit a pre-decided antagonist role; a producer estimates the villain is not really villainous "maybe 50/50." (NationalWorld, 2024-07-08)
- Villa producer [LI]: a producer who "has chats with contestants to see where things are going" and reports back to the EPs. (Deadline, 2022-07-15)
- Voice box [LI]: the Beach Hut producer's microphone link from the gallery into the confessional room. (The Tab, 2022-07-18)
